Longtime anti-violence activist to speak at rally

by Doreen Cudnik

Cleveland-If you've ever attended one of the Creating Change conferences presented annually by the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, you've undoubtedly run into Tracey Conaty. She has been a field director for NGLTF for the past two

and in the court system, providing crisis counseling to victims and training volunteers to assist them. She oversaw the collection of statistical data on anti-gay and lesbian violence and co-authored an NGLTF annual report on such incidents.

and a half years, and was recently named "It's a complete honor to be coming to Ohio. It's the best part of my job to visit with folks who are working on the front lines.

Already someone who is been quoted extensively in the media, Conaty's new job will keep her on the front lines in the gay and lesbian press as one of the "official" voices of NGLTF, the country's oldest national gay and lesbian civil rights organization.

Conaty will be in Cleveland on June 27 to deliver the keynote address at the preparade rally, an event that she is looking forward to doing.

"It's a complete honor to be coming to Ohio," Conaty said May 18. "It's the best part of my job to visit with folks who are working on the front lines. What we do in Washington, D.C. would be meaningless without the work that is largely unsung and unrecognized, but is the essence of our movement. We would be nowhere without people in Cleveland, Toledo, Cincinnati, and in cities and towns across the country who are coming out, being out, and organizing where they live."

In 1990, Conaty helped found Gay Men and Lesbians Opposing Violence, a local Washington group. She served as the group's co-chair until 1997, coordinating all aspects of the group's activites. This included conducting sensitivity trainings for the D.C. police department, serving as liaison to the police, advocating for victims of anti-gay violence with the police

Conaty said she feels "privileged" to be doing the work she does, and will devote much of her keynote address to discussing NGLTF's plans for marches on all 50 state capitals, set for next March.

"It's so important that every community get involved and begin planning and organizing for an event in their state capital," Conaty said. "I hope to get people excited for what is going to be a real movement-shaping event in March 1999." Conaty said she will also touch on gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender family issues during her address, since “There's no other issue that hits closer to home."

Finally, she said, she hopes to provide people with an overview of where we are in the movement, and "convey a sense of urgency about the need to organize.”

"Pride is a wonderful time to come together to celebrate,” she said, “but it's also a good time to reassess, reorganize and make plans that will carry on the Pride message beyond the celebration."
